These unbreakable ornaments are perfect for households with cats and babies. They'd also make great tie-ons for gift packages. To make this ornament stand out a little more, use a contrasting solid color to start, then switch to a variegated or different color yarn. Start with a single strand of standard worsted-weight 100% cotton yarn and #8 needles. These directions make an ornament approximately 2 1/2 inches in diameter. Directions: Cast on 96 stitches, using the accent color (optional -- single color throughout works just fine), leaving about a 6 inch tail. Knit the first row in the accent color. Switch to the main color, leaving a 6 inch tail, and purl the next row. Knit 2 together across the entire row. (48 stitches when finished.) Repeat previous row until only 6 stitches remain. (This part gets clumsy.) Cut off the yarn, leaving about a 6 inch tail. Using a crochet hook, pull the bottom tail(s) up through the 6 stitches and remove the stitches from the needle. Pull as tightly as you can and tie a double knot. (If you used 2 colors, you'll have 4 strands for the ties, which also looks better than a single strand.) Tie knots in the ends of the ties for a finished look and YOU'RE DONE! |
