Geometridae Mesoleuca

I love the surprises I get with my digital camera. The underwings seem to be trimmed in fur.

he common name seems to be something like "Beautiful Carpet." It's a "day flying moth." I also found similar listings under "Inchworm moths."

One of them did land on the side of the house with wings spread like a moth, but it only rested for a few minutes, then took off again. They do tend to hide their underwings, mothlike, when resting.

The behavior is more like a butterfly. They spend all day visiting the bushes in our yard and flying around like butterflies.

They fly very high--at least 30' off the ground. I've never seen them land in the grass.
